Digital TVs will use Wi-Fi in the Future

Digital TVs will use Wi-Fi in the Future

According to a recent study by In-Stat, embedded Wi-Fi chips could end up in about a billion consumer electronics devices by 2012. There are a few select television brands that are capable of connecting to the Internet via wireless (Wi-Fi), connection. In the near future, most TVs will use a form of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth technology.

Currently, TVs use ethernet or cable to connect to the Internet. According to a recent article in CNET, WiFi has been slow to televisions because the video streaming over Wi-Fi is too 'buggy.' Ethernet remains to be a reliable choice for connectivity and ease of use.

Currently, companies such as SONY, are already working on delivering HDTVs that they can stream content to directly to televisions. The only missing detail is the elimination of all those ugly wires.

As always, let us know what your thoughts are.

The February 2009 digital television transition deadline is getting closer than you may think. Many consumers can't afford, or haven't decided to switch over to HD televisions yet.

As a result, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have teamed up to provide consumers with online tools and resources to assist consumers with the upcoming transition to digital televisionlinks. The two organizations are promoting a 'green' message to consumers that decide to keep their old analog televisions. They put together a FCC/EPA fact sheet which includes facts and tips on how to continue to use their existing analog television sets and how to dispose of them too.

The Consumer Electronics Association has a website located at myGreenElectronics.org, where consumers can find electronic recycling locations and information on “green” consumer electronic products.

Dell to Launch “Greenest” Consumer Desktop

Adding to its “green-concern” factor, Dell, which is probably the world’s most environment-friendly computer maker, has announced its foray into the small desktop computer segment.

On ‘Earth Day’ yesterday, at the ‘Fortune Brainstorm Conference’ in Pasadena, California, Michael Dell, chairman of the company, introduced the company’s upcoming smallest (claimed to be) desktop PC.

Dell claims that its yet-to-be-named PC is not only their first smallest but also the most environmentally-responsible consumer desktop PC.

However, the company has not revealed the desktop PC’s hardware specifications. What is known, as per reports, is that this computer will stand on a holder and will be 81 percent smaller than a typical mini-tower desktop and will use up to 70 percent less energy.

It will compete with the likes of Apple’s Mac Mini and Everex’s MyMiniPC size-wise, if not in computing capabilities. To add to form-factor efficacy, this desktop PC from Dell will come in a recycled and recyclable packaging. With regard to the company’s environment protection efforts, Dell was the first in the IT industry to establish a product recycling goal in 2004. It completed the implementation of its global consumer recycling program in 2006.

On World Environment Day 2007, Dell announced its plans to partner with the ReGeneration — people of all ages who care about the environment — to become the “greenest” technology company on the planet. Coming back to Dell’s latest announcement, the company is yet to publicly announce the brand name and pricing of the upcoming product. The company plans to announce these details later this year when it releases the desktop.
